The
Aikido Kokikai Federation is an international organization of member
schools that offer instruction in the Kokikai curriculum under the
instruction of the Kokikai founder, Sensei Shuji Maruyama.
Sensei began his study of Aikido in 1953. He first came to the United
States in 1966 to offer instruction to the Ohio Judo and Karate
Association. He encountered many difficulties in the U.S., including
facing kicks and fast attacks for the first time, both features of
modern combat that are unknown to traditional Aikido. The difficulties
Sensei Maruyama encountered in overcoming these limitations of the art
led him to realize a simple idea: that a correctly coordinated mind and
body yields a very natural, comfortable and empowering feeling,
resulting in minimum effort for maximum effect, whether applied to
self-defense or to any activity in daily life. Because this idea is so
profound, Sensei Maruyama founded the Kokikai Federation to promote its
practice.
