KOKIKAI AIKIDO INTERNATIONAL
Sensei Shuji Maruyama
The Aikido Kokikai Federation is an international organization of member schools that offer instruction under the tutelage of the Founder, Sensei Shuji Maruyama. Sensei Maruyama began his study of Aikido in 1953. He came to the United States in 1966 to offer instruction to the Ohio Judo and Karate Association. In the U.S he encountered kicks and fast attacks for the first time, both features of modern combat that are unknown to traditional Aikido. Sensei Maruyama overcome these limitations and realized a simple idea: that a correct coordinated mind and body yields a natural, comfortable and empowered feeling. This feeling results in minimum effort for maximum effort. Because of this profound idea Sensei Maruyama founded the Kokikai Federation.
Tremendous power is unleashed when the mind and body are coordinated. We call this power Ki (kee). To realize our potential as human beings , we must develop this coordination. The resulting Ki power can be applied to any activity in daily life from self-defense, public speaking or for harnessing profound calmness and concentration for difficult negotiations. Kokikai Aikido develops this power through practice of our
Kokikai Basic Principles. These Principles provide a map towards greater calmness, relaxation, correct posture and positive thinking. Kokikai practice is oriented around the application of these Principles as self-defense techniques. The challenge to harmlessly and fluidly redirect a partner who attacks and resists; leads to a profound understanding of this non-confrontational strategy. Ki power then develops, and we can begin to apply the lessons learned to challenges of daily life.
